A woman came over claiming to be a fan, then proceeded to throw a drink on herself and blame it on The Miz. He got cuffed only to find out head trainer Bill Demott set the whole thing up.

About a month or 2 ago, i met up with the likes of Khary Randolph, Dan Panosian, Ivan Brandon, etc for a Drink 'n' Draw in NYC while Dan was in town. A few weeks before this though, my girlfriend and I had gone to an animal art auction for a rescue shelter, and she bought this bizarre stuffed kitten photo.

Add to that, I had just visited my pal Mike Manley, and took tons of pics of his cats (as seen in a previous post) on my phone. So, after a few Sam Adams Winter Ale's, I thought a dead cat would be a good thing to draw. THEN it becomes a collection! :) I knew my i-phone would come in handy some day!

To boot, my pal Chris asked me to alter the art to resemble his cat Wayne who passed away. Done!

Every time I visit my pal Mike, his cats (Fetchin on the left, Cornwell on the right) hop on my lap when I work. Sometimes to the detriment of the work. But screw it. I love it!

Cornwell decided he needed to oversee the piece Mike and I were working on for the "Art for Animals" fundraiser Dec 3rd, 2010. Or maybe he felt he was looking in the mirror? Either way....

As most artists know, sometimes you need to look at the art upside down. Cornwell gave his $.02, and thankfully no changes were made.

He then hopped over to Mike's desk to see how the inking was going. With that going well, he could spend his time on other things. Like looking at wires.

After a long day of work, Cornwell took his nap on my leg as we watched some tv.

....n Entertainment Center. Got me one of them speaking gigs with Illustrator/ Cartoonist/ Painter Mark Sparacio at the Entertainment Center at Carnegie Mellon In Pittsburgh, PA. We talked about working/ living as an artist, successes, failures, but the main crux of the seminar was about the "art of the pitch". How to get your idea across succinctly. We had a blast, and everyone involved could not have been nicer! Win!

I'm in love with this place already, just because they spelled my name right. Off to the right of this, they had an electronic book with Ben Franklin on video. You could type in a million different questions into the "book" from all of the different word choices (Seriously! I asked him if he liked slavery, and "does you like turkey?"), and he had an answer for each combination. Well, until I get my hands on it full time! bwahahahasnurgle.... >:-D

I originally did the cover drawing small to print out in blueline (which I did), but found that the smaller characters were too muddy to just go straight to inks with when I printed out the enlarged version. So they had to be tightened up first, before I could go to inks.

This was a pitch back in Dec that I did through BNS (Brand New School) for what would have been an animated spot for Subway Sandwiches. But they instead went with what you may have seen on tv lately, of a superhero on a movie set hanging from wires, while interspersed with other different kinds of people. Oh well, that's disappointing. But hey, that's showbiz!

I had a “happy accident” here, where I had previously built the UK flag, and was going to place it on his belt. Before I could reduce it’s size when I brought the flag into this illo, it covered the whole drawing. A couple of tweaks and a layer setting on “hard light” put underneath the lighting layers I had done on him, and voila!

This was one of my favorite jobs ever. I only WISH DC let me color this as well as pencil and ink it. Pg 9 was drawn in the hospital waiting room when I had to take a sick, pregnant friend in. What i won't do for friends and clients alike...!

I did color guides, hoping the colorist would follow them. Alas, they didn't really. Still, I was happy with the issue. Even sold the last page!

This weekend was another con. No trifecta though. No Boston con next weekend. Here are some of the sketches from the con this weekend. Unfortunately, I don’t own a camera (not enough people bought my art! ;) ), so I didn’t get all the sketches on film. But these were among my favorite. Namora, Batman (Grayson) vs Talon, Donna Troy Wonder Woman. On the Green Arrow piece, I unintentionally forgot the arrow!

GM/ DC Comics Rush City (2006)

Apparently DC wasn’t happy with the original art for the online ad they had for the co-promoted book “Rush City”, that was GM’s new (at the time) Soltice. The book was about some guy’s kidnapped daughter Sam, and he drove the car for like 5 issues I think. Never read it! Anyhoo, I had to provide turnarounds for the car (there are opposite angles not posted), and then a car garage background that followed the car as it spun. (imagine a camera in the middle of the room as it pans a full 360) Um....Wha? I had no idea how to do that. THANK JEEBUS for Chris (Kim Possible, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Garfield movies) Bailey. He’s worked in animation for yrs, and we’re pals. So he thankfully walked me through the process and it worked like gangbusters. Thanks Chris!

Coloring all of these were a blast! This whole project rocked, and it paid really well. Get well soon, GM! ;)

Starting out, this job was supposed to be more than 2 drawings. But either the budget wasn’t there, or they weren’t sure this was the direction they wanted to go. Either way, my poor pal (who got me the gig) had to do the transformation with only these 2 drawings. I’ll still never know how he pulled that one out of his ass! I wish the economy was better, because these jobs always pay well, and they’re usually fun.

I love drawing from the model, because it sets up all kinds of different problems from comics. It also allows you to try different things, as well as the obvious of learning from life. I really should do more of this. Hopefully soon!

This was a fun issue for me. A lot of creative freedom. And I got to stretch my grey toning muscles! And color muscles as well for the cover. Inks by Sean (Iron Man, Legend of the Blue Marvel) Parsons. I CAN’T WAIT for the day he inks me again! Been too long! The last page was inked by Mike (Batman, Darkhawk) Manley! Anutha great!

Back in 2005, I did a bunch of illustrations of music celebs for MTV. They were then put into either “after effects” or “final cut” (2 programs used for editing footage, or adding I guess. Not my area of expertise. But I’m leaning towards after effects because they added a lot of animation to the art) This project was a lot of fun, and working with the animation crew rocked. I hope I can do something with them again someday.

Some were drawn from photos, others were traced on vellum from footage so they’d line up with actual footage for transitions between the 2.

Somehow almost 2 months went by before this was done. Ooops! This initial sketch is roughly 4x6. I then took that, and plopped into the artograph (table top projector that faces down), and blew it up to the fit the cover dimensions. All pencil. No ink used. SOMEday I’ll go back to inking, but for now, it just works out too well without. Pencils and clean up took up yesterdays details. Today was all about color.

"My Private Hell"

I just finished the cover to Army of Darkness #23, and it was one of the more labor intensive ones. I spoke with the writer (Mike Raicht) about the storyline, and what we wanted to do. We both knew the story was set in Africa, and there was some sort of fire creature, but not much past that. I couldn’t wait to do this cover, as I had wanted to do a cover in all warm hues ( I love photos of Africa during sundown), and wanted to emulate that. As you’ll see, I did basically the opposite!

So we discussed creatures, and I tried researching African mythological creatures, fire gods, etc, but came up pretty short. I got bits and pieces, but ultimately decided it should represent the wildlife of the continent, and give a feel for the continent. So I researched, and picked the best of the animals, as well as adding some elements I found from the mythology. Then I did a quick color study to sell the writer on it.

Next up, I laid out the cover. I drew it pretty small, and didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. So I tightened it up a bit, and then popped it into the artograph (table projector) and traced it off. Why struggle trying to get everything to fit like in the sketch? Just use the sketch! Once drawn, I also researched African tribal paint, so I could give Ash some, as well as some jewelry. Nothing crazy though. Just enough to indicate it’s not the norm for him.

So with the cover drawn, I wanted to give the creature a charcoal/ brimstone type of feel. So I took a soft 8b thick, drawing class type pencil, and shaded on a toothier (rougher) paper over the pg on a light box.

Next up, the coloring. Like I said, I wanted to do a piece bathed in warms, but with the creature enveloped in flames, I wanted the cools to play off of it. I originally thought the creature would just be different levels of red, but then I remembered how you get blue flame on a stove when you turn it on, and wanted to play up that aspect as well. I also felt it was the easy way out to do different levels of just red, and really wanted to try to create something that looked cool. Makes the few hours less of sleep worth it! Well, not if you ask my mother! ;)

Most of this coloring is straightforward. The only real “trick” I did here was on the flames. After I colored them (and left the area still selected), to get the blue flames coming off the horns, I simply made a layer in PS on top of the colors already there, set that layer to “color”, and set the pen brush flow to about 7%, and washed over the flames with light blue.

Now, back to penciling #20!

Anyhoo, here's the latest AoD cover for #22. I'm probably due for another one in the next few weeks. Really looking forward to that one! The greek letters on the wall say "let us out".

This cover is spanking hot fresh! JUST finished it. The idea in my head for this cover was based off of the old tv serials, like “The 3 Stooges”, “Laurel and Hardy”, etc... They would always feel behind themselves before they turned around to see either Frankenstein, the big scary guy, or whoever else that was “threatening”. So since the movie this comic is based on takes a pg from The 3 Stooges, it seemed a no-brainer! Here now is the evolution of said cover!

First I laid out 2 quick sketches...

Next, I searched for reference on Google for a snarling wolf. I came across an awesome photo by Tanja Askani, the photographer who took photos of the deer and rabbit that made their way all over the internet. I reversed the photo so it was facing the direction I needed, and then werewolfed it out!

Then I decided, since the characters are so big on the pg, it would be best to draw them smaller first, then pop it in to my artograph. An artograph is a projector that faces down on the tabletop surface. Once you put your smaller sketch inside of it, you can make the sketch much bigger, and to the size you need, and then trace off...

Before I popped the sketch into the artograph though, I scanned it in, and laid out the black placement in photoshop. I actually really like how this turned out, and if it wasn't SO scratchy, maybe I'd have used it! My roommate really liked it too..

The cover is all pencil, and digital inks. No REAL ink was used in the production of this cover!

I debated back and forth between red eyes and the yellow, but the yellow pops more, and they’ll also match the logo color close enough. So it’s not completely out of left field. The logo also has red, so it all worked out. Add to that, I was dead set on yellow eyes to begin with. Ever since I saw “An American Werewolf in London”, I thought they looked downright creepy. See “Salem’s Lot” too if you don’t believe me!

This job for Gillette was an awesome job to work on. It was part illustration, part flash animation for an online game they were using to promote a deal they had with GM to give away one of their cars. The Charger I believe it was. I had already had some experience drawing the car the previous yr for GM/ DC Comics, when I drew turnarounds of the car in a garage that also spun around. But I’ll get to that when I get to that! I got these 2 jobs because of a comic called Killer Stunts, where I had to draw all kinds of vehicles. You’re always hoping that each job you do will lead to another one. Well, there’s 2 right there!

Here are a few of the illustrations I did. The animation is all in pieces, and frankly, this work is way better anyway! Some of these pieces were end pieces to each section of the game. The ultimate goal was to pick the woman up and bring her back to his or her place. Depending on whether you got the questions right or wrong, you’d get a different illustration letting you know you passed or failed.

What's in a name?

If you’re new to this blog, chances are I’m probably new to you! So over the next bunch of posts, I’ll be going over various comics/ illustration projects I’ve worked on. But comics is what probably brought you here, so I’ll start with one of them! Directly before AoD, I had done a few different titles for DC Comics, in the Cartoon Network line. The last of which was Samurai Jack, which I felt was NOT a good fit for me.

I’ve been able to stay afloat over the yrs by having the ability to draw in different styles, but Sam Jack wasn’t really one of them. I can admit it! the style (for me) was just the complete antithesis of how I wanted to draw. Add to that, I like to “move the camera” around a lot in my shots, and felt that with the style being so limiting, or rather I was limited by lack of knowledge of it, I couldn’t produce the kind of work I was happy with. Before that though, was Ben 10, and I thought that went a lot better.

20 years, or 20 minutes?

I'm currently drawing #17 of Army of Darkness, part 4 of the "Hellbillies and Deadnecks" storyline. I mention this because, well, I WANT YOU TO PICK IT UP! However, i wanted to describe something new to my process. I’m building things in Illustrator to place into the art. For one, siding on a cabin I’ve been drawing. The cabin is actually my grandfather’s, and my cousin David uses it to hunt. He sent me photo ref of it, both inside and out, and it’s some great stuff! But to draw the siding would just take forever, and drawing this as cleanly as possible, it would just be mess of blue and hb pencil getting it all measured out and drawn. So I just made the same shape in Illustrator, put it all together, then pasted it in Photoshop from Illustrator, and used the transform option under “edit” called “distort” to place the siding in at the perspectives I needed.

I used this process again for #17. I needed to have the character standing on the scaffolding, but to do so when the art would just be in pencil seems like another messy nightmare I’d like to avoid. Also, I think this aids the colorist, because now he doesn’t have to try and figure out what lines were drawn in for what in the background. And I left it on a separate layer to make the process easier for him.

The same can be said not only for using Illustrator, but for laying out the black placement on each pg. Once I’ve fully drawn a pg, I’ll scan it in, and add a layer in Photoshop so that I can just quickly lay out the black. If something in the design isn’t working, I can quickly erase it. No harm done to the actual work. Here’s how this pg looked in the process:

After I’ve done that, I’ll then sit in front of my screen with a board leaning on my cintiq tablet, and draw in all the shapes where the black goes. And yes, suicide does enter my mind at those times!

New Years Resolutions

Happy New Yrs! So, like most people, we come up with resolutions for the new yr that we won’t follow. Which ones won’t YOU be following? I’ve come up with mine, and I really hope I can stick to it. after being there for everyone for so many yrs, I've decided that I'd still like to do that, but in a way that benefits me more by doing less! I'm going to start asking people if they need help with things (dishes, the trash, shoveling snow, you name it) when they are ALMOST done doing said tasks. that usually elicits a "no thanks." win-win!

Well, it’s almost ironic that my first official blog here anyway (not counting myspace) would be on the first of the yr. I suppose not writing one is so 2007. And I don’t want to be left out of all the action! Anyhoo, I currently draw the title Army of Darkness, based off the movie starring Bruce Campbell for Dynamite. They also publish titles like Terminator, Lone Ranger, The Boys, etc.

Here’s a pg I finished last month for #16. The book is shot from my pencils, so I can’t slop the pg up like I usually would if it was being sent to an inker. It was difficult to adjust to in the beginning, because that meant really changing a lot of aspects of how I work, like drawing mostly on the back of the pg now, then tracing through on a lightbox.

It’s then sent off for production, which involves cleaning up the dirt off the page from some of my underlying drawing with a col-erase blue pencil, and then filling in the blacks wherever the X’s are placed. After that, they send it off to the colorist on the book, Ivan Nunes, who I think is doing a fantastic job.
